A Cry for Help

Maybe you have been with someone who suggested something and you went along only to find yourself asking questions about what you were going through along the way? This pretty much fits the description of the disciples as they have agreed to follow Jesus’ leadership about taking him to the other side of the lake that evening. That found themselves asking this question, “Who is this then, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” As you read Mark 5:1-10 these disciples question is about to get answered. We need to remember that when we obey Jesus is responsible to getting to where we need to go or be at so that we can be on mission with him in a lost and dying world. As Jesus steps out of the boat and into the city cemetery as we would say he was met by a naked man out of his mind. (Luke 8:26-39) This man apparently lived up town one time and then something happened in his life that he became morally unclean, Filthy as some would say. However as we read the text this man’s condition was a spiritual condition that needed to be addressed first. As you read this man was living in the tombs or cave where dead people were buried. You can almost smell the rotting flesh as it lays in those tombs and decays. No one could control him because no one could subdue him. This man’s problem really began at birth, you see he was born dead in trespasses and sin. His natural bent was toward sinning. The Scripture is right that all of us have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God. This man tried to fix his problem many times through cutting himself with stones while he cried out.  This reminds of 1 Kings 18, Elijah tells Israel to make a choice between God and Baal and worship the true God who answered by fire and quit riding the fence between the two. If you have read that passage of Scripture you know that the prophets of Baal cried out, cutting themselves and their god was silent. Of course when Elijah call on the LORD, he answered by fire from heaven. Here we have a demon possessed man crying out day and night, cutting himself. God hears his cry, and sends Jesus. The man ran up to Jesus as to intimidate him but then fell down at his feet. Crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?” (Mark 5:7) The disciples question has just been answered, The natural created world and the spiritual world all bow down to Jesus because he is the Son of the Most High God! Jesus name means Jehovah is Salvation or He will save his people from their sins as found in Matthew’s Gospel.  These men were in the presence of God himself. Jesus is not only to save the disciple from their sin but he is also able to save this gentle from his sins. Maybe you are crying out to God for help, don’t be surprised when he sends someone into your life and they share the good news of Jesus Christ with you.

When Jesus confronted this man asking him who his name is, the demon responded that his name was Legion, for we are many. This man was possessed and control by demons. Not just one but many. You may be wondering if you are beyond God helps, I have some great news for you. God heard this mans cry for help and sent his Son, Jesus Christ all the way across the lake one evening just to answer this mans cry for help. No person is beyond the help of the Lord Jesus. When we cry out for help because we have come to the point and place that if the Lord Jesus doesn’t help us then nothing else or no one else will be able to help either. You may be like the disciples asking who is Jesus that heaven and earth obey him? Or you may be like this man living in the tombs, so dirty with moral filth and sin that you believe you are beyond God’s grace? This man cried out and the Lord answer his prayer for help.
