Jesus’ Authority to Cleanse
Everybody at some point in life will struggle with a bacterial infection in their body. Which at this point they normally will go to a doctor and receive some antibiotics for ten days and they will be healed of their bacterial infection. Let’s read about a man who suffered from leprosy in Mark 1:40-45. As Jesus continued to preach throughout Galilee word about him traveled even to those who were living a quarantine life. This man had to live a quarantine life because he had leprosy. Leprosy is called Hansen’s disease today but in Leviticus 13 we read the signs and symptom’s of what the Lord calls leprosy. Leprosy is caused by a bacteria living on the inside of a person’s body and it affects the limbs and nerves of the body so that a person is continuously infected. It is a disease that is on the inside of a person’s body that becomes outwardly visible. This disease would cause people to be separated from their family, from society and even from going to the temple to worship the Lord. The leper didn’t doubt Jesus’ ability to heal him and make him clean what he wanted to know was if Jesus was willing make him clean.” Instead of claiming his healing in Jesus’ name he wanted to know the Lord’s will in this matter. He knew that Jesus had authority and that he was able to exercise it according to the Lord’s will. Something we all need to remember is this: Jesus is approachable. This leper broke protocol and went to Jesus. Jesus listened, had compassion on the man and was merciful to him. Jesus was willing to cleanse him from his leprosy. Actually Jesus separated this man from the leprosy. Then Jesus instructs him to go and show himself to the priest and follow the instructions that were given in Leviticus 14 concerning what a person is suppose to do when they are cleansed of leprosy. Instead of being obedient to Jesus command he went out and told everyone what had happened to him. This man was no longer separated from his family, being in his community or the temple where he could worship the Lord. When we stop and look closely at leprosy we see that it is an infection that is on the inside that has outward symptoms of the disease. This infections separates people from others and it is something that only God can heal a person from. Sin is the same way. Sin is being disobedient to God’s instructions that have been given to us in his word. Sin separates us from God and others. Only God can cure man of his sinful heart. When sinners approach Jesus humbly, asking him to forgive them of their sin, asking him to give them a clean heart and new life, they can know for certain that Jesus say’s to them, I am be cleansed. We need to remember that Jesus has the authority to cleanse a person from their sin.
