Jesus' Authority to Teach

In previous Olustee Festivals, there would be a guest speaker who would come to one of the civil groups and they would give a twenty minute lesson about something that would be connected to that time period and the civil war.  What is interesting is they would know what they were teaching about because they had studied their subject very well. One might would say, that they had studied their subject so well that they were an authority on it.  In Jesus’ day there was a group called the Scribes.  This group would study the Torah (the Law) that was given by God to Moses so that the people would know how to apply it to their lives. Please read Mark 1:21-28 and we will read why the people were astonished when Jesus taught in the synagogue. As we follow Jesus I find it interesting that he makes Capernaum his headquarters for ministry.  Capernaum means consolation- the idea of bringing comfort to those who are hurting. Jesus is ministering to hurt and broken people their in the synagogue on that day the word of God. The people were astonished because they have never anyone teach with authority on the Law.  Jesus received his authority from his Father in heaven.  Jesus would exercise his authority not only in teaching but also in ministering to others as well. During the time that Jesus was teaching we read that he was interrupted by a man with an unclean spirit. That unclean spirit questioned Jesus but Jesus rebuked it and commanded that it leave.  It obeyed Jesus’ command immediately and left the man.  The people were astonished saying this is a new teaching with authority. Authority is the ability to perform an action. Jesus’s action to commanding the unclean spirit to leave and it obeying his command validated Jesus’ teaching.  We must ask ourselves this question: Why would I want to follow Jesus? First of all Jesus is calling you to following him. He is the only one who can teach you how to live life but you must first surrender to him as Lord. When you turn your life over to Jesus, he deposits the most wonderful gift you will ever receive: the Counselor will come to live in you.  The Counselor is the Holy Spirit who will not only counsel you but also comfort you when you need comforting.  Jesus calls him the Spirit of truth and that he will guide you into all truth.  He tells us that the Spirit of truth will speak to us, not on his own authority but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. The Spirit of truth will glorify Jesus, and will take from him and make it known to us. (John 16:13-15) When we as followers of Jesus Christ walk in the Spirit, He not only bears his fruit through us but helps us to love the Lord our God with out total being and our neighbors as ourselves. Will you listen and follow Jesus?
