Last week as Jesus revealed his Fathers plan to the disciples Peter rebuked the Lord Jesus by opposing to his face God’s plan. Jesus of course rebuked and told him to get behind him and stop opposing the Father’s plan. In the midst of this Jesus goes on and gives an invitation to anyone who wants to follow him and then he gives three reasons why we must follow him on his terms. Please read Matthew 16:24-28. Jesus’ invitation is open to anyone. Doesn’t matter who you are or the sins you have committed. This is the uniqueness of the gospel of Jesus Christ. God calls people to put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ alone for the forgiveness of sins and to be born again from above. He uses his disciples to carry the message of this saving grace and the invitation is open to anyone who is willing to follow Jesus on his terms. There are no deals being made with God for salvation. Jesus’ terms of following him and being saved from sin so that a person can spend eternity in heaven are these. To deny themselves take up their cross and follow him. To deny ourselves means that under the leadership of the Holy Spirit we are voluntarily laying aside those things in our lives that keep us from becoming like Christ. To take up our cross each day means we bear up under the burden that is laid upon each day. We must remember that the Lord knows what we can and can’t handle. He helps us in bearing these burdens each day. Here are three reasons why we should take Jesus up on his invitation and follow him under the conditions that he has laid out. First no one can pay their sin debt to God. As we read verse 25 if a man gains control over the whole world he with all of that cannot pay for his sin debt to a Holy God. The second reason is there is no profit for a person if they forfeit their soul for the worlds goods. When a person forfeits their soul for the worlds goods they are not making a wise long-term decision. This life is only temporary and when death comes a person cannot take the worlds goods with them. We will spend eternity on one of two places. Heaven or Hell! The third reason why we should follow Jesus under these conditions is that he will reward each person when he returns with his angels and in his Father’s glory. Just imagine when you follow Jesus under the conditions that he has given you will be rewarded for your faithfulness. Here is the good news Jesus Christ paid for our sin debt in full when he was on the cross at Calvary. This invitation that Jesus gives goes out to any person who is tired of being dirty with sin and wants a new life. Please come to Jesus!
