Jesus recognizes our need for spiritual discernment
The other day when I was in the grocery store picking our limes I had to discern which two limes were the best out of all the ones that were on display. I had to exercise discernment. There is another area of discernment that I need along with the rest of society that is spiritual discernment. We all need to learn how to discern the difference between the truth and what is false. The disciples grew up under the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees before Jesus called them to follow him. You know as well as I do that the disciples of Jesus probably struggled between the teaching they grew up with and the teaching of Jesus. As you read Matthew 16:5-12 Jesus says to his disciples, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Jesus was aware of their discussion and begins rebuking them for their little faith. He asked them questions that pointed out their lack of faith in God’s provision and their need for spiritual discernment. Matthew looks back now remembering the resurrection of Jesus and the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came filling the disciples of Jesus Christ with power from on high so that they could be obedient. He didn’t recognize his need for spiritual discernment then but Jesus did. God recognizes not only your physical needs but also your spiritual needs and meets both of them fully in the Lord Jesus Christ. God the Father has deposited the Holy Spirit who is the Counselor, the Spirit of Truth in the life of each person who believe in the Lord Jesus. His ministry is to remain in our lives forever convicting us of sin, righteousness and of the judgment to come. He teaches us to discern the difference between what is the truth and what is false. Just as the disciple’s minds were open to understand so the Lord will open our minds to understand if we seek after him and obey him. The Lord will speak to you in a way that will make you think. Cause you to pray and ask for wisdom, knowledge and understanding. He will use other people around you but most importantly he will use his word- the Bible. This Bible is the only book that is living and active and sharper than any double-edged sword. If you are struggling to spiritual discernment ask the Lord for help. He will help you. Take your time and read through the Bible. Memorize a passage of Scripture. Look up the original meaning of the words that have been translated into today’s language. Meditate on this passage listening for the Counselor to teach you. When he helps you to discern the truth you have to obey. If you have never been to a Bible study I would like you to come and join our or find a local Church that teaches the Bible and attend.
