No One Knows
I can imagine that at some point in your life you knew that company was coming to visit and when they did show up it was unexpectedly. There are events just like this in life that still surprises us even though we know that they are going to happen. Please read Matthew 24:36-44 about an event that will take place and that it will happen unexpectedly and be a surprise to us all as Jesus answers his disciples question concerning the timing of his second coming. Jesus teaches his disciples that the Son of Man is coming at an hour that only the Father knows. Jesus told his disciples that the angels in heaven and he himself does not know when this event will take place. It’s a secret that only God the Father has kept to himself. This passage of Scripture in Deuteronomy may help you to understand, “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.” (Deuteronomy 29:29) Jesus uses the life of Noah to help us understand what will happen. Listen as we read this passage of Scripture, “By faith Noah, being warned by God events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.” (Hebrews 11:7) Noah listened to and obeyed God because his life and his family’s life depended on it. Your eternal destiny depends on you obeying God’s Son. Listen to what Peter writes, “For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the day of judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly.” (2 Peter 2:4-5) God is commanding Christians to live out and communicate the gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost and dying world because one day at an unexpected time Jesus will return. The Son of Man upon his return will send his angels to gather the elect from the four winds of the earth. That will be those who are taken, those are the ones who will spend eternity in heaven. Those who are left will be judged just as those who were left outside of the ark when the flood happened. Those are the people who will spend eternity separated from God in a literal place called hell with no chance to get out. Christians are to stay alert for the coming of the Son of Man and remain faithful in their walk with him. A disciple (Christian) learns to walk daily depending on the power of God to work in their life through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit using God’s word to transform their life. Are you walking daily with Jesus expecting the unexpected to happen at any moment?
