Sent with instructions

Earlier in Jesus’ ministry he had spent all night in prayer praying for those that the Father would give him so that they could be with him and that he might send them out to preach and he gave them authority to cast out demons. (Mark 3:13-15) They have spent time with Jesus, they have listened to him teach in parables, they have seen his lessons validated as he healed people, forgave people of their sins and set people free from demonic possession. They have seen him still the raging storm on the lake and now it’s their turn to be sent out and tell others about Jesus. Please read Mark 6:7-13 as Jesus calls the twelve and sends them out two by two, as he gives them authority over the unclean spirits. He would charge them with instructions to follow so  that they can go and fulfill the mission they would be sent on. The disciples’ time with Jesus would change their lives forever. He would teach the crowd in parables (short stories) to fulfill the Scriptures and then give his disciples the spiritual insight that they needed so they could understand and apply the teaching to their lives. Dr. Henry Blackaby rightly said that if a Christian cannot hear what the Lord is saying to them then their relationship with him is in trouble. Every person who has been born again from God in Christ Jesus has been given the ministry of the Holy Spirit! The Holy Spirit’s ministry is to help believers know the Lord and what he is saying to them. (John 14:26) Just as the disciples have spent time with Jesus, and know what he is saying to them as you spend time with Jesus in his word (the Bible) you will know what the Lord is saying to you. Just as he charges or gives instructions for the disciples to follow in Mark 6:8-11, he will give you instructions to follow as he sends you on mission in your local community as well. As the disciples went out on mission they obeyed Jesus’ charge and saw people respond to their message of repentance. This message of repentance would call people to change their mind, their heart toward the sin in their lives with God’s word. We often forget that the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. When these disciples stood up and preached repentance the Holy Spirit took the word of God and cut into the people’s hearts and minds with conviction of sin. The Lord did more than that, he validated their message with people being set free from demonic possession and healing from sickness. As you and I walk in the Spirit with the Lord Jesus, obeying his instructions he will validate his work through your life.
