The disciple's heart
Sometimes in life we find ourselves in the middle of something and we do not see the bigger picture that is taking place. For example, the recent political events and unrest in this country. The disciples of Jesus must have felt the same way because they may still be asking, “Who is this that even the wind and the sea obey him?” Please read Mark 6:45-52 as Jesus commands his disciples to go to the otherside of the lake to Bethsaida. We learn from Mathew’s and John’s gospels why Jesus sent the disciples away from the crowd. They wanted to take Jesus by force and make him King of Israel. Instead Jesus sends everyone away so that he can get alone with the Father and pray. The disciples find themselves now in the night on the lake in the middle of another storm. You may be able to identify with the disciples in this situation. You have obeyed Jesus and his will that he has made known to you and you find yourself in the middle of a storm that you have no control over. Life’s storms come in all shapes and sizes. The Lord Jesus will use the storms of life to reveal the condition of your heart. The condition of our heart reveals what we believe about Jesus and who he is. The last storm the disciples were in Jesus was in the boat with them and he just said, “Peace be still!” The wind and the lake obeyed! They asked the question who is this, that even the wind that water obeyed him. Now out in the middle of the lake in the middle of the night they find themselves rowing against the wind. Jesus looks up from his time of prayer and sees that they are in the middle of the lake rowing against the wind. He intends to pass right in front of them walking on the water as they continue to row the boat. Job never saw the Lord walking on the water, but here is what he told his friends about the Lord in Job 9:8, “who alone stretched out the heavens and trampled the waves of the sea.” The disciples reveal the condition of their hearts when they cry out in fear that Jesus is a ghost. Jesus reveals himself to them at that moment. Matthew writes that Peter asked Jesus to command him to come to him on the water. At that moment Peter walks on the water. When Jesus and Peter get back into the boat they confess and worship that Jesus is the Son of God. The reason the disciples didn’t understand the loaves of bread being multiplied is because the condition of the disciples heart didn’t know that Jesus is God. The disciples would continue to grow and be sanctified progressively in the Lord. Let me ask you a question today, what is the condition of your heart? Do you truly know Christ Jesus the Lord and God the Son? If you are his disciple, then when the storms of life come ask the Lord Jesus to reveal the condition of your heart as he sees it. Then ask him to continue to grow you in your faith in him. He will continue to progressively sanctify you so that you may know him and the power of his resurrection and be able to share in the fellowship of his suffering being conformed in the likeness of his death.
