The transformation of Jesus
There will come a point and place in our lives where we must make a decision to follow Jesus on our own. As we follow him and become his disciple there will be those times in our lives where he takes and leads us to and through something so that he can reveal more of himself to us. Please read Matthew 17:1-8. We must remember that earlier Jesus asked his disciples who do people say that I am and the disciples responded with their answers. Then he asked them who they say that he was and Peter confesses that he is the Christ the Son of the living God. At this point Jesus promised to use the disciples to build his church and then he revealed his Father’s plan of suffering, death and resurrection. Jesus rebuke Peter for opposing God’s plan and then gave an invitation to follow him along with the promise that some would not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom. Six days later Jesus takes Peter, James and his brother John and leads them up on a high mountain. Peter continued to follow Jesus because Jesus had the words of life. Jesus took these men so that he could further reveal himself to them. He was transfigured, transformed so that they saw Jesus for who he really is. He is the great “I Am” of the Old Testament. John writes it this way, “the Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14) Peter would go on to write something very similar in his letters as well. Jesus would allow these men to see and hear Moses and Elijah talk to him. Peter interrupts the moment by asking Jesus a question and then it happened. A bright cloud covered them and the voice spoke and all three heard the same words: “This is my beloved Son listen to Him!” The disciples fell face down and were terrified, scared to death. Jesus comes and tells them to get up and not to be afraid. They only saw Jesus when they got up. Think about this for a moment these men had a life changing encounter with the God of the universe revealing himself and Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Father gave the disciples instructions that we can all apply- we need to listen to Jesus. Notice the pattern that applies to our lives. We follow Jesus daily as the disciples did. Then there may come a time in our lives where Jesus is going to take and lead us to a place where he wants to reveals more of himself to us so that we come to know him and trust him completely. It is at this point that we to will bow down and worship in the fear of the Lord.
