Who is this?

Have you ever had one of those days where everything started out great even up to the end of the day and then all of a sudden something unexpected happened? You didn’t even see it coming but it did and the next thing you know is that you are being tossed around like a beach ball during a hurricane. As you read Mark 4:35-41, this small group of disciples were having a unique day of listening to Jesus teach to the crowd in parables and then explain what he was teaching the crowd to them so that they could understand and apply it to their lives.  When he was through teaching the crowd for the day he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” So the Bible says they left the crowd and took him as he was. It must have been a beautiful day to be on the lake in a boat and listen to Jesus teach. Then the unexpected happens, a sudden windstorm arose on the lake and they found themselves taking on water in the boat and fearing that they might die.  Circumstances and situations can change in just a matter of seconds.  However they were with Jesus and he was in the back of the boat asleep on a cushion. They woke him up asking him if he cared for them because they were going to drown if something didn’t change. Jesus woke up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind immediately ceased and there was a great calm on the lake. Jesus asked them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith? One of the reasons why the disciples were so afraid is because they were looking at what was happening around them. His second question, Have you still no faith?  We need to remember that no one can exercise faith until God has spoken.   Even though the disciples had obeyed Jesus’ command to go the other side, the windstorm revealed that they didn’t really know who Jesus was because they asked the question, “Who then is this that even the wind and the sea obey him?” They would grow in their knowledge and understanding of who Jesus is and place their faith in him alone after his resurrection from the dead. Jesus would prove himself to be the Lord of heaven and earth, his creation obeys him. It is written in Isaiah 55:10-11 that God’s word goes forth and accomplishes the purpose for which it was spoken. God’s word never returns void. If you and I are going to live by faith, we have to have a close and personal relationship with the Lord so that we can know when he has spoken to us. God’s Holy Spirit living on the inside of the believer will take from Jesus and make known to us what he would have us do. Is your relationship with the Lord Jesus such that if he were to say to you, “Let us cross to the other side.” you would obey him?
